I have visited the New Winter Palace for the last 9 years and am very disappointed to learn that it is to be closed and will be demolished and rebuilt within the next 2-3 years.

We booked in very late for a one night stay in Oct 2007 in the Sofitel New Winter Palace. The welcome was efficient and as we were late and had no baggage, there was no facility for the supply of toothbrushes, etc - just a small point! The value for money in our case was poor but our fault because of a last minute decision. The room was clean and comfortable and the guy who does the eggs for breakfast was amazing.
