Gecko Villa is not a hotel or resort but a holiday villa with its own pool that you can rent for two nights or more. It's looked after by a local family who cook superb Thai meals (included in the price) and meet you at the airport etc. This was a very enjoyable way of getting away from the tourist crowds to see the heartlands of the country: small rural villages, endless rice paddies, forest temples, little-know waterfalls and parks etc., and to live among the Thais themselves. The hosts live in a village close by and were very thoughtful and kind, and seemed delighted to show us the local attractions - and even how to cook some Thai specialties of the region. They also respected our privacy when we just wanted to lounge by our pool. Conclusion: unbeatable if you want a quiet and private rural getaway, with delicious Thai food, and to see the side of Thailand away from the main tourism centres. Not recommended for those looking for pulsating nightlife or the big city buzz!

A large well equipped and decorated holiday rental, Gecko Villa in Udon Thani serves superb Thai food and the hosts were very friendly.
