Zanzibar
The islands of Zanzibar and Pemba, just a few miles off of the east coast of Tanzania in east Africa, are exotic spots becoming increasingly popular for tropical beach holidays. Zanzibar is known as the “spice island”, famed for its aromatic crops of cloves, and its atmospheric medieval Arabic “Stone Town” delighting tourists as muchmore
We enjoyed our holiday in Zanzibar - Ewelina and Amour. Date of travel: Dec 2007
We enjoyed our holiday in Zanzibar
Our Zanzibar holiday was very relaxing, beautiful beaches and lovely people. We only stayed one night in Stone town; it was a nice place but we had to get to the beach...
An amazing Island! - Sebastian and Barty. Date of travel: Dec 2007
When we were booking for Zanzibar holiday, we real did not know much about the Island, but the first day we landed we were not disappointed at all. it is an amazing place. We stayed for 2 nights in stone town, the local peoples are wonderfull and very friendly, the town is full of history. We also did spice tours which was great. then we headed to the east coast of the island at Jambiani village.
Unique - Ewelina and Ali. Date of travel: Jul 2007
Unique
Zanzibar is very unique holiday location; we can't wait to go back there. The Zanzibar people are very friendly, the food in the touristy areas is very clean and generally good, but beware of the mosquitos, especially at night time when they become more active. The island is surrounded by a coral reef, the beaches are pristine and the sea is an unbelievable turquoise colour. Diving and snorkelling in spectacular. Stone Town is worth a visit, but one night is enough, after then you'll want to head to the beaches.
Stationery for the Kids of Zanzibar - Sue. Date of travel: Oct 2006
Very poor, travel best to go on organised trips. Climate good, hardly got bitten too. Take jellies for walking out to the reef as you cannot purchase these easily. Plus dental care very lacking so take provision.
Zanzibar - Pens/Paper etc for the kids needed - Chris. Date of travel: Oct 2006
Take loads of pens/pencils/books and paper for the kids as this is what they really need. They also love football so love the tee shirts too and hats.
Pefect honeymoon destination - Steve Newell. Date of travel: Sep 2006
We travelled to Zanzibar on our Honeymoon, what a beautiful destination, perfect for honeymooners. We stayed 10 nights at the hotel Malpenzi on an All Inclusive basis. The hotel is right on the beach and what a tropical paradise this was. I would recommend Zanzibar as a great beach destination after a safari. Most beautiful beach we have seen. Tour Operator: Kuoni
Zanzibar, what a magical place! - Kevin Madison. Date of travel: Aug 2006
I’ve been to Zanzibar twice in my life, last time was summer 2006 and I have to say it’s my favourite place I’ve ever visited. The beaches pristine, just like you see on picture postcards, and at times it seems like you have the whole beach to yourself! We did some day trips as well as lazing on the beach. Jozani Forest was great, we got to see the Red Colobus monkeys, which are only found on Zanzibar Island. It had just rained when we saw them, so they were a bit bedraggled however it was still great to see them jumping around in the trees so close to us. We also did the spice tour which was a lot better than I thought it would be. We walked around quite a large spice farm and the guide showed us so many different, wonderful smelling spices and also explained what they were used for. The highlight was watching the tour guide’s assistant climbing up the trees to get coconuts, I tried myself but couldn’t even make one step up the tree, so difficult! Stone Town is another part of the island which is great, very Arabic style to everything, and you can get a great curry, as all the spices are so fresh. The hustly and bustly, the people trying to sell you stuff can be a bit frustrating but I found if you just say ‘hapana asante’ meaning 'no thank you' they usually leave you alone. We had a guided tour of stone town with very informative guide, seeing where the slaves were kept at the church is very eye opening. Also went to the Tanzania mainland on safari but that’s a whole other story… Still buzzing and it’s a year since I was there. 3rd trip will hopefully be somewhere in the not too distant future. Would recommend the tour company which I went with both times, you can find them on the Internet discovertanzania.org, as they were very good.
Relex and you'll love it - Tom. Date of travel: Nov 2005
We spent the first couple of days of our week in Zanzibar in Stone Town, which was once the old spice and slave market and has a long history of Arab and British colonialism. The town is very decrepid - most of the once grand merchant houses are in disrepair or have fallen down which is a shame - tourism brings so much money into the country you'd think some could be spent on keeping some of the old buildings intact. The spice tour well worth doing as is a tour of the town, which you can do by yourself or with a guide. Wander around the streets and visit the market where veg, fruit and fish are sold in the same fashion as always I'd imagine... visit after you've eaten, not before! The Emerson and Green rooftop restaurant is lovely for a sundowner - thought the food is not that great. Murcury Bar also good for a drink. Best restaurants were Archipelgo and the Livingstone. We spent the remainder of our holiday on the North Coast at Ras Nungwi - which is very beautiful and unspoilt - though developing fast. Great diving around Memba island. Remember to take US Dollars (you need $50 for arrival tax and $30 for departure). There are ATMs in Stonetown but not elsewhere. Many restaurants and hotels charge an extra 10% for credit card payment. Main resorts have internet access. Cell phones work if you get international roaming, but are expensive. Hotels offer telephone but its is much much cheaper to use the travellers telephone kiosks (there is one in Stonetown). Remember things happen slowly in Zanzibar, dont rush and you'll love it. Zanzibar is the best! Lots of seafood, accommodation right on the beach, good swimming - just like paradise. Very romantic place and ideal for relaxing. The seafood open air market in Stonetown is definitely recommended.
