Sitges is a great beach resort we have visited annually since 1996. However, two cautions: First, Santa Tecla festival is fun, with fireworks, drums, processions and dances. It always has been. But in 2007, not listed in the Ajuntament de Sitges's own schedule of events, the Sitges Al Dia, they had live concerts followed by a thundering mobile disco on the 22nd, 23rd and 29th of September. These were right opposite the Santa Maria Hotel and Subur, went on till 5.30am, and ruined our holiday because of the sleep deprivation. Surprisingly, they seemed to be sponsored by the Ajuntament, with many of the fans wearing official t-shirts. There was no police presence - the station shut for the night, and no escape from the racket in the main part of town. It was really annoying. The tourist board could only say "Well, this is Spain". Pathetic! Tourists beware; I can only conclude that the town council is engaged in a war of sonic intimidation against some of the most popular hotels in Sitges. Even on the night of the 28th, at 3am, some kids with council provided drums and sax struck up traditional festival dance tunes. Next, take enough clothes! Normally, it used to be possible to get new tennis shirts, polos, trousers etc in Sitges, but now everywhere is a Dolce and Gabbana concession, or Moschino, or Antonio, and we wasted much time trying to find reasonably priced t-shirts. Oh, and to get in Menjar de Tast, youll need an advance ticket and it starts at 8.30, not at 7 as they tell English people.

I am lucky enough to have a brother who lives in Barcelona and has an apartment in Sitges over-looking the marina. It is a fab place to visit even though it is primarily a gay resort. It is still very Spanish though, retaining its "fishing village" feel. The people are friendly and life goes on amongst all the tourists etc. There are dozens of great bars and restaurants catering for every taste and pocket. Also various night clubs that go on till the early hours. The beaches are long, golden and sandy, with a gay one in the centre of town and a nudie one a little way out. There are plenty of hotels and apartments also for any budget, but book early if you can as they can get fullin high season, particularly in August when they have a big festival for their local saint with amazing fireworks on the beach. And don't forget to go shopping, there are some great shops selling all your heart desires. If you are staying in Barcelona, Sitges is well worth a visit. You get the train from Sants or Placa de Catalyuna stations and it takes approx 35 minutes and costs around €2.50/£1.80, worth every penny. Tour Operator: Flight only-Thompson
